Hinged Door Wardrobes

A hinged door wardrobe is one of two door options for a built in or walk in wardrobe, the other being sliding. Both do the same job of storing and organising your clothes, the difference comes down to how the doors open and what that means for the room you’re working with.

What Makes Hinged Doors Different

A hinged door wardrobe is built as a full carcass, similar to a kitchen pantry, and fitted into place with the doors mounted directly onto it. Open the doors and you can see and reach everything at once, there’s no track to work around and nothing to slide out of the way first.

The trade-off is clearance. The doors swing outward, so the room needs enough open floor space in front of the wardrobe for them to open fully.

Why Choose Hinged Doors

If your room has the clearance for it, hinged doors give you a few genuine advantages over sliding.

Every section of the wardrobe is visible and reachable the moment the doors are open, rather than working through a track one section at a time.
Hinged doors suit a traditional or timeless bedroom style, and give more flexibility in door profile and detailing than a sliding panel does.
Because each door is a separate panel rather than part of a sliding system, there’s more room to mix finishes, add moulding or detailing, or vary panel sizes across the wardrobe.
Each door lines up with its own section of the wardrobe, which makes it easier to keep things zoned, work wear behind one door, casual clothes behind another, rather than one long run you have to scan across.

Hinges and Hardware

The hinges matter more than they might seem to. A well specified hinge holds its alignment over years of daily use, a cheaper one starts sagging or squeaking within a couple of years. We use hinges rated for repeated daily use and suited to the coastal climate, since salt air and humidity are harder on hardware than an inland environment. If you’d rather not have handles at all, push to open doors are an option, the door releases with a light press and closes flush, which gives a cleaner, more integrated look. Otherwise there’s a full range of handles available, from a discreet minimal pull through to something more of a statement.

Finish Options

Laminate, in a range of colours and timber look finishes
Polyurethane, for a smooth, painted look
Timber look profiles, including shaker style and v groove detailing for a more classic finish
Heritage pelmets, a detail worth considering if you’re in one of the Coast’s older character homes and want the wardrobe to sit naturally with the rest of the room, rather than looking like a recent addition

We’ll go through the current range and what suits your room during your consultation.

Hinged Door Wardrobe FAQs

Yes. Hinged doors swing outward, so the room needs clearance in front of the wardrobe for them to open fully. Sliding doors track sideways instead, which is why they suit a tighter room better.
Generally, yes. A hinged door wardrobe is built as a full carcass rather than assembled from fewer components on site, so it typically costs more for the same amount of storage.
Yes, hinged doors work on either, the choice comes down to the room’s clearance and your preference, not the wardrobe format.
